In the volatile cultural climate of 1968, Melvin Van Peebles, a black filmmaker, shocks the world with his debut feature, The Story of a Three Day Pass. Undeterred, Melvin sets his sights on Hollywood, intent on pushing its boundaries with an even more contentious piece, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. Every major studio, including Columbia, where Melvin has a three-picture deal, shuns his audacious vision. Left with little choice, Melvin dares to self-finance, risking all he possesses to introduce the world's first Black Ghetto hero on the big screen. And so, against a backdrop of societal unrest, Melvin takes on Hollywood, crafting a narrative that would redefine cinema for black audiences. Fast-forward over three decades, and Melvin's son, Mario Van Peebles, steps into the director's chair to pay homage to his father's pioneering work. With a blend of sincerity and candor, Mario unravels the behind-the-scenes struggles of creating Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. He recounts the tale of Melvin's audacious ploy to finance his film under the guise of a black porno flick, his evasive maneuvers to dodge creditors and unions, and his efforts to free his camera crew from the clutches of a prejudiced law enforcement officer who doubted their lawful possession of film equipment. Despite a barrage of death threats and the temporary loss of sight in one eye, Melvin rallies a diverse, rag-tag crew to complete his revolutionary film. His perseverance gives birth to a new era on the brink of eruption: Independent Black Cinema.
