Plot

Set against the backdrop of Semarang in 1998, Ave Maryam tells the story of a dutiful Muslim woman named Maryam, who is charged with caring for seven elderly nuns living in dire conditions at a nursing home in Ambarawa. Amidst the daily grind of housekeeping, feeding, bathing, and sun-bathing these neglected nuns, Maryam also shoulders the responsibility of maintaining the church. Her life takes an unexpected turn when a new pastor, Yosef, arrives to lead the church. Yosef's liberal ideologies starkly contrast with Maryam's conservative persona, yet their conversations strike a chord with her. As their interactions intensify, Maryam finds herself drawn towards Yosef, sparking feelings she had never experienced before. However, this budding relationship comes at a cost. Maryam begins to falter in her duties, often arriving late to the nursing home and overlooking critical tasks, such as administering Sister Monic's medication. The strain culminates in a poignant moment on the beach, where Yosef celebrates Maryam's birthday. As she blows out the candles on her cake, Maryam is overcome by a sudden realization of her transgressions. This moment of self-reflection is further heightened when they return to the nursing home to find the elder nuns had planned a surprise party for her 40th birthday. Moved to tears, Maryam embraces the nuns, acknowledging her mistake of neglecting her duties for her time with Yosef. This revelation forces her to question her loyalty and commitment, setting the stage for a profound self-examination.
