In the pulsating heart of the South American jungle, small-town fundamentalist missionaries Martin and Hazel Quarrier find themselves in a race against time to convert the secluded Indian tribe. They inherit a mission previously stewarded by Catholics, whose efforts met a gruesome end at the hands of the natives. Orchestrating the evangelical endeavour is the haughty Leslie Huben, a man whose religious zeal is matched only by his competitive spirit against his Catholic counterparts. His fixation on spiritual triumph often overshadows his concern for the very souls they are there to save. Hazel Quarrier grapples with a paralyzing fear of the natives, while her husband Martin is irresistibly drawn towards their culture. This delicate balance is further tipped with the arrival of Lewis Moon, an American pilot who integrates himself into the tribal life. However, his interests extend beyond the tribe, straying towards Leslie's youthful wife, Andy. As the rumbling bulldozers of civilization close in, the volatile mix of characters, cultures, and personal interests teeter on the edge of calamity.
