Plot

In the tumultuous backdrop of the 1930s Los Angeles - a city draped in the shadows of poverty, racism, and disease, a young man named Arturo Bandini (Colin Farrell) arrives from the frosty climes of Colorado with a dream. He aspires to pen the quintessential Los Angeles novel, fueled by his love for humanity and the animal kingdom alike. His world spirals into a vibrant mosaic of emotions when he encounters Camilla Lopez (Salma Hayek), a radiant Mexican beauty serving him a cup of coffee, her eyes radiating dreams of escaping her circumstances by marrying a wealthy American. Camilla's charm bewitches Arturo, igniting in him a passion that intertwines with his literary pursuits. Despite his meager means, he persists in his writing endeavors, spurred on by the sporadic checks and wisdom imparted by H.L. Mencken (Richard Schickel). Yet, his relationship with Camilla wavers, tainted by his inexplicable cruel streak and the looming specter of his insecurities. As a hopeful immigrant and an aspiring writer, Arturo yearns for two prizes: a successful writing career and a blue-eyed blonde to call his own. His relationship with Camilla, however, confounds his desires, sparking a tumultuous love story that mirrors the chaotic world around them. Will the name "Camilla Bandini" ever be etched in the annals of his life, or is it a fleeting illusion in the dusty LA air? "Ask the Dust" invites you on a journey of love, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of dreams against the gritty canvas of pre-war California.
