Ana by Day (2018)

Caught in the confines of a middle-class existence, Ana leads an exemplary life painted in shades of the ordinary. She is a paragon of routine, a product of a well-ordered upbringing, yet she harbors an unspoken yearning for the extraordinary. The threads of her well-ordered life begin to unravel with the sudden emergence of a doppelgänger, a mirror image who seamlessly slips into her life, fulfilling her obligations and living her life as if it were her own. This unexpected alteration in her life's fabric provides Ana with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste the forbidden fruit of total anonymity. As her double navigates the mundane corridors of her existence, Ana seizes the chance to break free from the chains of societal norms and expectations. Nina finds refuge in a nondescript hostel, seeks solace in the melodies of a nostalgic Music Hall, and finds companionship in Marcelo, a man similarly fleeing from his past. She cloaks herself in the comforting anonymity of the night, a stage set for her to escape her reality. Yet, the intoxication of newfound freedom soon morphs into a sobering reality of loneliness and deception, a world peopled by others who, like her, are on the run. This film doesn't dwell on the origins or the motives of the mysterious double. Instead, it focuses on Ana's transformative journey as she grapples with the paradox of freedom and isolation, the thrill of rebellion, and the stark reality of her choices. Can she truly escape herself? Is the door to her old life forever closed, or does a chance to return still linger?
