An American Carol (2008)

In the heart of a traditional July 4th family gathering, a grandfather kindles the curiosity of his grandchildren, spinning the tale of Michael Malone, a notorious documentary filmmaker and uncanny Michael Moore doppelgänger. Malone, with his ingrained disdain for all things American, stubbornly rejects the celebration of Independence Day and even shuns his nephew Josh, on the brink of being deployed to the Middle East. Malone's radical views unwittingly draw the attention of a bumbling trio of Afghan terrorists, who, under the guise of film producers, seek his aid in creating a propaganda piece intended to rally new recruits to their cause. As the night deepens, Malone is visited by an apparition of his idol, JFK, who cryptically foretells the arrival of three spectral visitors. In a whirlwind of spectral intervention, General Patton and George Washington emerge from the annals of history, joined by country music sensation Trace Adkins in the guise of the Angel of Death. These unorthodox specters strive to illuminate the true worth of patriotism and the necessity of just wars, juxtaposing them against the destructive consequences of unbridled pacifism. Caught in a tug-of-war between his longstanding beliefs and the poignant lessons of his spectral guides, as well as the ominous shadow of the terrorists' intentions, Malone finds himself at a crossroads. Will he continue down his path of disdain for his homeland, becoming the terrorist's propaganda puppet? Or will the spectral interventions lead him to a newfound appreciation for his country, and the true meaning of patriotism? This unique retelling of Dickens' A Christmas Carol explores these questions in the modern American context, infusing it with humor, history, and a healthy dose of spectral intervention.
