Amundsen (2019)

Norway, 1926. Roald Amundsen, the famed explorer, has mysteriously disappeared in the North Pole, as reported in a local newspaper. Upon learning this, his brother Leon embarks on an anxious journey to Roald's residence, only to be mistaken as a trespasser by Bess Brigads, Roald's youthful love interest. As they exchange stories, Bess unravels the history of a young Roald Amundsen, a child raised in a joyous family captivated by the mystique of the Poles, the uncharted territories veiled by the frozen kiss of sub-zero temperatures. Tragedies strike the family, claiming the lives of their parents, leaving Roald and Leon to find solace in their shared dream - to conquer the North Pole, with Roald as the frontiersman and Leon as the financial backbone. However, Frederick Cook's claim of reaching the North Pole in 1908 forces a change in their plans. Roald sets his sights on the South Pole, unknowingly igniting a fierce competition against Robert Falcon Scott, a British explorer harboring the same ambition for his empire. Roald triumphs in 1912, marking a victory for Norway and himself but incurs the disdain of the London Geographical Society. Bound by a prior commitment, he embarks on a voyage to study the Arctic ocean streams, a journey that stretches from five to seven years aboard the ship Maud. This prolonged isolation and an unexpected encounter with a tribe of Inuits seeking medical aid for a sick child, transform Roald, revealing the complexities of his character. As the night unfolds, Bess and Leon find themselves immersed in tales of Roald, a man celebrated for his ventures but loathed for his rigid determination to fulfill his childhood dreams, no matter the cost. Simultaneously, they anxiously await news, hoping to confirm if Roald has indeed met his end as suggested by the newspaper.
