Plot

In the mundane corridors of a local VA hospital, we find Harvey Pekar, a file clerk whose existence revolves around the humdrum of paperwork and the lively banter with his colleagues. Their conversations, a colorful mosaic of topics ranging from the subtle notes of jazz to the crumbling pillars of American culture, and from the newest jellybean flavors to the profound intricacies of life, punctuate the monotony of Harvey's routine. His sanctuary lies within the worn-out walls of his apartment, a haven brimming with countless books and LPs, a testament to his voracious appetite for reading, writing, and jazz. Cleveland's thrift stores and garage sales serve as his treasure troves, where the euphoria of a quarter-priced find is cherished. A chance encounter at one such sale introduces Harvey to Robert Crumb, a kindred spirit in the guise of a greeting card artist with a shared love for music. Crumb's eventual rise to fame as an underground comic artist illuminates a new path for Harvey, who becomes captivated by the notion that comic books can transcend beyond children's entertainment and into a respected art form for adults. Inspired by the raw honesty of naturalist writers like Theodore Dreiser, Harvey embarks on a journey to create his own comic book, 'American Splendor.' This unvarnished self-portrait captures the essence of his working-class life, mirroring the grit and charm of his everyday experiences. Launched in 1976, his comic garners him a cult following that thrives throughout the 1980s, drawing the attention of Joyce Barber, a co-owner of a Delaware comic book store. Harvey finds his perfect counterpart in Joyce, as they navigate the peculiarities brought on by his unexpected celebrity status. Together, the pair journey through the surreal landscape of fame, bound by their shared love for the unassuming splendor of everyday life.
