Plot

Raised in the heart of West Texas, Ricky Brown (Ryan Kwanten) is a high schooler whose life has been dominated by the local tradition of gridiron football. Yet, his heart yearns for more than just scoring touchdowns. Haunted by the recent death of his older brother, Ricky struggles with the expectancy to step into his brother's cleats as the school's leading star. Desperate for a new course and to escape the weight of his past, he absconds from his small-town existence and the watchful eyes of his mother (Karen Black). Ricky's journey leads him to the bustling metropolis of New York City, where he reconnects with his former mentor, John Cross (Hill Harper). John, once a guide on the field, now serves as a spiritual shepherd, leading a small Catholic congregation. Here, Ricky encounters Vera (Natasha Lyonne), a vivacious diner waitress whose free spirit might hold the key to his quest for direction. Simultaneously, Ricky finds himself entangled in the complicated dynamics between John and Rosie (Élodie Bouchez), a young Frenchwoman with an intimate connection to his mentor. This intricate relationship threatens to have profound implications, casting long shadows on the future of all three individuals. "America Brown" is a riveting exploration of identity, freedom, and the enduring search for one's place within the world.
