Plot

In the heart of the majestic royal residence of Sandringham, the outbreak of World War I stirs a wave of patriotic fervor. From the youthful George Dacre (Danny Worters), a fourteen-year-old eager to serve his country, to the mature estate manager, Captain Frank Beck (David Jason), a veteran soldier with a heart full of duty, the male staff is drawn towards the battlefield. Newlywed Ted Grimes (William Ash) also takes up arms, leaving behind his fresh marital bliss. Their departure, heavily laden with naivety and valor, leads them on a journey to the Dardanelles. Upon their arrival, they are met with a disheartening reality, characterized by a dismal lack of supplies and disarrayed organization. The men, camped vulnerably on a beach, become exposed to the merciless gaze of Turkish snipers. Yet, their most daunting encounter lies ahead at the battle of Gallipoli. Guided by the steadfast Captain Beck, the Sandringham Company advances into the battlefield, only to be shrouded by an eerie mist, an ethereal cloak that seemingly swallows them whole. Their mysterious disappearance leaves a void back at Sandringham, with only Ted, injured and held captive by the Germans, making a solitary return. Despite Queen Alexandra's (Dame Maggie Smith) relentless efforts to unveil the fate of the vanished soldiers, the only trace of the disappeared men that surfaces is Captain Beck's watch. This enigmatic tale of duty, sacrifice, and unexplained loss weaves together the mystery of the Sandringham Company, leaving an indelible imprint of their courage and commitment.
