In the heart of Tokyo, 1993, Kanao and Shoko, a couple bound by love, expectation, and the shared anticipation of their firstborn, navigate through life's complexities. Kanao, an art school graduate turned shoe-repairman, lives life at a leisurely pace, an antithesis to the regimented world of Shoko, an employee at a modest publishing agency. Their tranquil domesticity is occasionally punctuated by her meticulously planned schedules, including their intimate moments, and his harmless dalliances. An unexpected opportunity catapults Kanao into the tumultuous world of courtroom sketching, where he becomes an eyewitness to Japan's most riveting murder trials over the ensuing eight years. Amidst the raw exposure to societal decay and human ugliness, Kanao grapples with preserving his inherent calm. Simultaneously, Shoko embarks on an inward journey triggered by her personal battles with depression, the pain of losing a child, and the turbulence within her own family.
