Plot

In the heart of Tangshan, a humble truck driver named Da Qiang and his loving wife, Yuan Ni, along with their twin children, Fang Da and Fang Deng weave a tapestry of simple happiness. Their world shatters on the fateful day of July 27, 1976, when a devastating earthquake razes Tangshan to the ground. Da Qiang tragically loses his life attempting to save their children from their crumbling apartment. A collapsed beam ensnares the twins, thrusting Yuan Ni into an agonizing decision - save her son or her daughter. She heartbreakingly opts for Fang Da. Unknown to her, Fang Deng, the daughter, overhears her decision, miraculously survives the catastrophe and is rescued by a compassionate soldier. Adopted by Mr. Wang and his wife, Fang Deng becomes Wang Deng, and as she grows, so does her resilience. Fast forward thirty-two years, now a married woman living in Vancouver with her daughter and her Canadian lawyer husband, she is drawn back to her homeland following another earthquake. Driven by an unspoken sense of duty, she voluntarily joins the rescue team. Fate intertwines her path with Fang Da's, and she learns about the years of struggle endured by her mother, Yuan Ni. A reunion ensues at Yuan Ni's home, where old wounds are exposed and familial bonds are tested. Amidst the pain, a resolution emerges, painting a poignant picture of love, loss, and redemption. Aftershock is a tale that navigates the tremors of life, both literal and metaphorical, and explores the strength of the human spirit in the face of calamity.
