Plot

In the bustling city of Toronto, a teenage boy named Simon leads a life shaped by tragic circumstances. Raised by his Uncle Tom, a tow truck driver with a sullen temperament, Simon navigates a world left in the wake of his parents' untimely deaths in a car accident eight years prior. His mother, a violinist, and his father, a repairman, had a chance encounter that led to love, leaving Simon with an expensive violin — an inheritance that threatens to be sold for mortgage payments and looming university fees. One day, Simon's world is turned upside down when his French teacher, Sabine, introduces a translation exercise. The class delves into a chilling tale from a French newspaper — a pregnant woman unknowingly carries a bomb to Israel, planted by her boyfriend. The bomb, designed to detonate mid-flight, is discovered before the plane's departure, sparing her and her unborn child a horrific fate. Simon, translating the story with remarkable interest, paints himself as the unborn child. Intrigued by his interpretation, Sabine, who also serves as the school's drama teacher, encourages Simon to expand the story into a play. Simon embraces this project with fervor, spinning the tale further into his reality. He begins to claim that the woman in the story was his mother, Rachel, and the would-be bomber was his Palestinian father, Sami. This audacious claim ignites a whirlwind of speculation, triggering a wave of controversy that extends beyond the classroom and into the realm of the internet. Simon, Sabine, and Uncle Tom are forced to confront this tangled web of truth and fiction, making choices that will shape their understanding of reality and their place within it. In a world where stories can be as binding as blood, Adoration explores the power of narrative in weaving personal histories and shaping identities.
