Above Ground (2017)

In the heartland of southwest Missouri, Thad Sitter (Clayne Crawford), a man grappling with the aftermath of divorce, finds solace in his part-time job at a weight loss clinic. Yet, his true source of income is a clandestine operation, serving as the intermediary between his boss, the notorious weight loss magnate Gayle Benson (Heather Roop), and her illicit diet pill suppliers. This precarious arrangement runs smoothly until the suppliers hike their rates, triggering Gayle's lethal response and thrusting Thad into the grim task of evidence disposal. Parallel to this, Thad's former wife, Julie (M.J. Brackin), is in the throes of a tumultuous breakup with Sheriff Crane (Robert Leeshock), having discovered her lingering feelings for Thad. The spurned Sheriff, consumed by jealousy, catches wind of the murders and cunningly implicates Thad, hoping to monopolize Julie's affections. Now a potential liability to Gayle's underhanded dealings, Thad is forced into hiding, pursued relentlessly by his ex-boss and the long arm of the law. In a desperate bid to clear Thad's name, Julie employs the services of private investigator Jake Liebig (Ken Hudson Campbell), who sets about unraveling the twisted web of murder and Thad's abrupt vanishing act. However, as Julie edges closer to unveiling the truth, she unknowingly places herself and Jake in the crosshairs of danger, raising the stakes in this deadly game of cat and mouse.
