Plot

In the heart of London's intellectual society, we meet Rosamund (Sandy Dennis), a young, introverted scholar immersed in her doctoral studies at the iconic British Museum. Her life is a symphony of solitude, with her after-dark hours spent evading the uninvited advances of her male acquaintances. However, her monotonous existence takes an unexpected twist when she crosses paths with the charismatic George (Sir Ian McKellen), an emerging star in the world of television news, introduced through a mutual friend. A second chance encounter culminates in an unplanned tumble on the sofa and leaves Rosamund with a life-altering news — she's pregnant from her inaugural intimate experience. Desperate, she attempts a self-abortion, which tragically fails. Left with no other choice, Rosamund decides to embrace the impending motherhood, a journey she embarks upon alone and fraught with discouragement. Her only support in this uncharted territory is her loyal friend Lydia (Eleanor Bron). A Touch of Love (1969) is a poignant exploration of a young woman's solitary trek through an unplanned pregnancy and the trials of single motherhood in a society that offers her little solace.
