In the sweltering August of 2019, Frank embarks on a deeply personal journey after he stumbles upon his own story, echoing from a past two decades old, in a freshly minted book. His journey is a pilgrimage, a desperate quest for Marie, the woman who once held his heart before she vanished into the vast expanse of the United States. As Frank traverses an America gripped by a paralyzing heatwave and suffocated by an atmosphere of suspicion and political paranoia, he is drawn like a moth to the flame towards the parched desert, the last known haunt of Marie. His path intertwines with Liz, a sharp literary agent, and Nina, an enigmatic sex worker who crafts intricate scenarios for her clients and films their rendezvous. Nina, strangely drawn towards Frank, brings him into her world as a cameraman. She often performs with a young woman whose uncanny resemblance to Marie stirs up a whirlwind of memories and existential musings within Frank. This journey becomes a labyrinth of past and present desires, a narrative woven with threads of lost love, revenge, and a yearning that dances on the edge of self-destruction, all recorded in a twenty-year-old diary.
