A Storm in Summer (2000)

In the heart of a bustling city, we meet the cantankerous Mr. Shaddick (Peter Falk), a seasoned Jewish shopkeeper whose routine life is jolted when he unexpectedly becomes the guardian of a young black boy, Herman Washington (Aaron Meek). Fleeing the tumult of Harlem through a sponsorship program, Herman lands at Shaddick's doorstep. Initially, Shaddick is eager to shrug off the responsibility, but a defiant streak prompts him to keep Herman, spurning the affluent lady who attempts to whisk him away. As the seasons change, so does Shaddick's heart. He finds himself growing fond of Herman, a bond that intensifies when he is thrust into the role of the messenger of melancholy news, a role eerily reminiscent of a moment from his own past.
