Plot

In the ragged, forgotten corners of Reetveerdegem, an imaginary hamlet nestled near the dilapidated industrial heart of Aalst, the five Strobbe brothers, burdened with debts and disillusionment, find themselves back under the roof of their pensioned mother, 'Meetje'. Their days are a monotonous cycle of dead-end jobs, drowned in an ocean of alcohol, reckless gambling and fleeting sexual encounters. Amongst them, Celle's son Gunther, a child of just thirteen, is also reluctantly embraced, treated more like an unruly baby brother than a son. Despite Gunther's higher IQ and a more refined temperament, no one anticipates him to break free from the chains of his family's notorious reputation. Yet, his path could diverge; the spark of love might ignite a desire for change, or an unexpected step into fatherhood could pull him further into the spiraling abyss of his father's lifestyle. A vibrant portrayal of a young boy's struggle against his inherited destiny, The Misfortunates paints a stark picture of life on the fringes of society, where hope and despair dance in a perpetual tug-of-war.
