Plot

In the quaint town of Scottsville, settled in the heartland of upstate New York, a tale of familial bonds, personal growth, and the complexities of adulthood unfolds. Rooted in a shared past marked by the tragic loss of their parents in a car accident, adult siblings Sammy and Terry Prescott find their paths converging once more. Anticipation fills Sammy, a single mother who resides in their family home with her eight-year-old son Rudy, upon hearing that Terry, her estranged brother, is set to return after a lengthy absence. However, Sammy's excitement is tempered when she discovers that the restless Terry has returned, penniless, with the primary intention of borrowing money. Despite this, Sammy embraces Terry's extended visit, hopeful that his presence will provide Rudy with the much-needed adult male figure he lacks, given the absence of his unreliable biological father. As the responsible bank lending officer, Sammy's life is a stark contrast to Terry's aimless wanderings, casting her as the dependable sibling while Terry is perceived as the irresponsible drifter. Yet, as Terry steps into the unfamiliar role of a mentor to Rudy, and Sammy battles her own demons—navigating the dynamics of her relationship with longtime friend and lover Bob Steegerson, and contending with her rigid, micro-managing new boss Brian Everett—a surprising similarity in their levels of maturity surfaces. "You Can Count on Me" is a poignant reflection on life's intricacies, the strength of family ties, and the unanticipated parallels that exist beneath the surface of contrasting lives. This story explores the deep bond between siblings, the struggles of adulthood, and the enduring significance of home, serving as a testament to the enduring power of family in the face of adversity and the passage of time.
