A Severe Test (1913)

In the throes of wedded bliss, Daisy Jones experiences a sudden emotional upheaval when her husband, Frank, neglects to kiss her one morning. This perceived slight convinces her that his love has dwindled. In a moment of dramatic desperation, Daisy hatches a theatrical plan, shared with her friend Ella via a note, to fake her own drowning by leaving her clothes on a lakeside pier. Intending to watch the ensuing chaos from the shadows with Ella, Daisy accidentally swaps the notes. The erroneous note lands in her husband's hands, revealing her plot while Ella, horrified, discovers the truth. Seizing the opportunity, Frank decides to teach Daisy a lesson. As Daisy and Ella stage the 'suicide', Frank feigns horror, then dismisses the clothes with a whistle and a swagger. Witnessing his nonchalance, Daisy fluctuates between heartbreak and indignance, while Frank, eager to extend the ruse, orchestrates a faux wedding announcement between himself and a certain Isabelle Smith. However, this prank spirals out of control when a mix-up results in the announcement being published in the newspaper. The Jones couple, drowning in panic, simultaneously rush to the Smiths' residence. The arrival of Daisy and Frank at the Smith's house adds to the confusion. Daisy, prepared for a confrontation with Isabelle, is taken aback to find out that she is actually a large, intimidating cook. Meanwhile, Frank is on his knees, pleading for forgiveness from the elderly, slightly deaf Smith couple. In a twist of fate, Daisy comes to her husband's rescue from the irate cook, only to berate him for his actions. At this point, Frank presents the note meant for Ella, leading to a tearful reunion and a plea for forgiveness. Amid the comedy of errors and chaos, Daisy realizes that Frank's love for her still stands strong, quelling her initial fears.
