Plot
In the arid landscape of New Mexico, March 1862, Union Colonel Pembroke finds himself ensnared in a web of dishonor and desperation, driven by the ambitions of another Union officer, Colonel Ballard. Labeled a coward for surrendering his stronghold, Fort Holman, to the Confederates without resistance, Pembroke faces a daunting ultimatum: reclaim the fort from its Confederate captors or meet an untimely end.
The task before him is Herculean, a near-impossible mission that teeters on the brink of suicide. His only hope lies in an unlikely band of misfits, a ragtag assembly of condemned men comprising cut-throats, deserters, horse-thieves, and murderers. Among them is the notorious looter, Eli Sampson, a wild card in this desperate game of survival and redemption.
But Fort Holman is not just any fortress. It is an impenetrable citadel boasting deadly, rapid-fire Gatling guns and a highly sophisticated security system engineered by Major Frank Ward. The stronghold stands as a formidable adversary, its towering walls echoing with the question: has anyone ever breached its defenses and lived to narrate the tale?
Pembroke's journey, fraught with peril and uncertainty, becomes a testament to courage in the face of insurmountable odds, a quest for redemption etched in the dust and blood of the Civil War. Will he find his reason to live, or will this mission give him a reason to die?
