A Normal World (2020)

In "A Normal World" (Un Mundo Normal), we journey into the heart of Madrid, Spain, where we meet the audacious, sarcastic Ernesto Caral, a middle-aged theater director grappling with personal and professional upheaval. His partner Julia has left him, his once illustrious career has hit a slump and he finds himself sharing a humble abode with his perceptive and artistic teenage daughter, Cloe. Ernesto comes from a lineage of artists, including his late actress mother, Carolina, and his concert pianist brother, Max. His young daughter, Cloe, is a budding painter, even as she pursues a degree in law. Amid the chaos of his life, Ernesto is torn between nursing his ailing mother, finding a new project to resurrect his declining career, and reluctantly considering filming a TV series to alleviate his financial woes. When the unexpected strikes and Carolina passes away, Ernesto's life takes an unexpected turn. In her final moments, Carolina had made Ernesto promise to scatter her ashes in her birthplace, Altea, Alicante, rather than bury her in a graveyard. Struggling with the loss and the dilemma of honoring his mother's last wish, Ernesto boldly, yet recklessly, steals the hearse during the funeral service. His action sets off a chain reaction, prompting Cloe to join him in this illicit mission. As the news reaches Max, a frantic search ensues, involving the funeral company and the police. As Ernesto and Cloe embark on a poignant road trip stretching over 479 km, they find themselves confronting unwelcome ghosts from their past and navigating through their strained relationship fueled by resentments and regrets. Simultaneously, Max grapples with his own insecurities, feeling like an imposter in his career as a pianist, always playing other's compositions and never his own, while also dealing with his supportive boyfriend, Ivan. In this touching odyssey, Ernesto must face the life he's lived, reconcile with his resentful daughter, Cloe, and evade the law, all while striving to honor his mother's final wish in a world that's anything but normal.
