Plot

In the throbbing heart of Chicago, 1993, we meet James Fray, a 23-year-old entrapped in a vicious cycle of self-destruction, fueled by a relentless addiction to drugs and alcohol. In the aftermath of a wild party, he tumbles off a balcony, shattering his nose and waking hours later in a fog of intoxication, only to find himself on a plane to Minnesota. His destination is the Hazelden Foundation, a renowned sanctuary for addicts grappling with their demons. James enters the rehab center, resistant and skeptical, only to find himself amidst a motley crew of fellow patients. Leonard, an ex-mobster with a tongue as sharp as a knife; John, a man haunted by his uncontrollable sexual desires; Roy, a religious zealot wrestling with bipolar disorder; and Miles, a former judge and clarinet player, who unexpectedly turns on his roommate. Against the strict regulations of the center, James crosses paths with Lilly, a delicate beauty battling her own addictions and emotional dependencies. Under the watchful eyes of Lincoln, the center's supervisor, and Joanne, a psychologist, James is forced to confront the ghosts of his past and the life he once lived. Simultaneously, he is visited by his older brother, Bob Jr., a man burdened by the weight of his younger brother's addiction, striving to steer him towards recovery. James finds an unlikely ally in Leonard as he embarks on his journey to sobriety, all the while nurturing a forbidden love with Lilly in the shadows of the center. When their secret rendezvous are uncovered, James is not only gripped by fear for Lilly's safety but also stands at a crucial crossroads. Each decision he makes could irrevocably alter the course of his life, setting him on a path to redemption or plunging him back into the abyss of his addictions.
