Plot

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Santa Barbara, two families - the affluent Pringles and the middle-class Fosters, coexist. Lucien T. Pringle (Leon Ames), a widowed businessman with his hands full of enterprises such as a bank and a radio station, sadly remains estranged from his children's lives. On the other end of the spectrum, Melvin Colner Foster (Wallace Beery) is a hands-on father, owning and operating a seafood packing plant, a venture stemming from his fisherman days. Senior year at the local high school unites Judy Foster (Jane Powell), the school's melodious songbird, with Ogden "Oogie" Pringle (Scotty Beckett), the high school orchestra's conductor and Carol Pringle (Dame Elizabeth Taylor). Their lives are intertwined through years of friendship, musical collaborations, and undercurrents of rivalry. As the senior-class dance approaches, a trickling series of events stir the pot of their relationships. Carol masterminds Judy's dance partner as Stephen I. Andrews (Robert Stack), a war veteran turned local druggist's assistant. Judy, naive to Carol's intentions, is torn between her growing fondness for Stephen and an attempt to stir jealousy in Oogie. Carol, however, is scheming to snatch Stephen away from Judy, yet Stephen is not oblivious to the rivalry brewing between the two girls. Oogie is caught up in the whirlwind, attempting to reclaim Judy's affections through well-meant advice. Amidst this swirl of teenage love, friendship, and rivalry, an unexpected twist comes in the form of Melvin's surprise 20th anniversary gift for his wife Dora Foster (Selena Royle). How these interconnected lives navigate through the web of misunderstandings, rivalries, and affections forms the heart of "A Date with Judy."
