Bankruptcy propels William Ziel back to the inherited land of his estranged father with the hope of cultivating a fresh beginning for his fragmented family. Joined by Sarah, his wife, and their adopted daughter Mary, William steps onto the soil of Hemelop-Aarde, where echoes of the past whisper through the air. Soon, they're greeted by Lazarus, the old farm hand who offered solace to William's father Frederick in his desolate last days. A seemingly coincidental encounter between Lazarus and Mary blossoms into an unexpected kinship, connecting two souls across the chasm of age and experience. However, Lazarus is not merely an old man haunted by a painful past but also a bearer of a chilling secret: a demonic child with a voracious hunger for human souls, carried in a sack that never leaves his side. Despite Sarah's initial doubts about Lazarus, his enigmatic charm gradually wins the hearts of William and Mary. Yet, the local community's reaction to Lazarus' return from his distant wanderings suggests Sarah's trepidations may not be unfounded, casting a shadow on the Ziels' nascent domestic bliss. A series of unsettling events soon begin to ripple through their lives: An old woman's death in the kraal, a violent act in the shadowy forest, drawing the threat ever closer to the Ziels.
