The year is 1918, the zenith of America's participation in World War I - a time of raising Liberty Bonds, casting doubt on German immigrants, and seeing a surge of young men joining the war effort, lured by patriotic fervor and propaganda. In the heart of a quaint Texan town, Horace Robedaux finds himself grappling with the societal pressure - conflicted between enlisting and leaving behind his young wife, Elizabeth, and their infant daughter, Jenny. Elizabeth's bumbling younger brother, constantly echoing words of war, and her stern father, who had initially disapproved of their union, now proposes to safeguard his daughter and granddaughter, freeing Horace to serve his nation. Amidst this emotional turmoil, a silent adversary marches into the town - the influenza epidemic that cripples the nation, threatening to upend everyone's carefully laid plans.
