In the throes of a mid-life crisis, George Webber, a well-known 42-year-old composer and playwright (Dudley Moore), finds his life teetering on the edge of profound change. His relationship with the talented actress and singer, Samantha Taylor (Dame Julie Andrews), though steeped in love, is marred by his often childish antics and a connection that leans more towards the intellectual than emotional. Samantha, however, perseveres, her love for George weathering his erratic behavior and his voyeuristic tendencies towards his debauched neighbor's carnal escapades. One day, George's world is upended when he spots an enchanting young woman, a radiant vision that he rates as an "eleven" on a scale where tens were previously unimaginable. Despite the fact that she is probably half his age and on the precipice of her own wedding, George becomes infatuated, seeing in Jenny Miles, now Jenny Hanley (Bo Derek), an embodiment of his deepest desires. As George and Samantha's relationship strains under a series of misunderstandings and heated arguments, George surrenders to his mid-life crisis and embarks on a pursuit of his alluring vision, following Jenny to a Mexican resort where she is honeymooning with her new husband, David Hanley (Sam J. In Mexico, George's pursuit of Jenny intertwines with an encounter with Mary Lewis (Dee Wallace), a lonely woman vacationing at the same resort, and thought-provoking discussions about love and relationships with his gay lyricist Hugh (Robert Webber).
