Plot

Amid the cacophony of the high-octane world of death metal, we meet Soichi Negishi, a timid, aspiring pop musician. Dreams of pop stardom don't keep the lights on, pushing him into the unlikely role of Johannes Krauser II, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the infamous death metal band "Detroit Metal City". On stage, he transforms into a demonic persona, Krauser, who is feared as a terrorist from hell, notorious for unspeakable acts and for encouraging his fans towards immoral and illicit deeds through his music - a caricature of the genre's darkest stereotypes. Negishi, who is internally at war with DMC and its grotesque ethos, finds himself trapped in his alter ego. Beneath his unassuming exterior, he harbors a potent rage and an exceptional talent for guitar play, which ironically fuels his success as Krauser. Bound by loyalty to his bandmates and label, and manipulated by a cunning manager, he struggles to break free from the chains of DMC. Simultaneously, Krauser provides an unlikely outlet for Negishi’s frustrations over his stagnant pop career, which is limited to street performances that only draw disdain for his sentimental tunes. As Negishi yearns for the adoration that DMC and Krauser command, his dual existence spirals out of control, with Krauser surfacing more frequently and gaining popularity. "Detroit Metal City" chronicles Negishi's desperate endeavors to escape the vicious cycle, shed his Krauser identity, and ascend to pop fame. Each episode explores his struggle, illuminating the dichotomy between the persona he is forced to adopt and the artist he truly yearns to be.
