Plot

In the small town of Northampton, Massachusetts, a chorus unlike any other comes to life in the stirring documentary, Young @ Heart. The ensemble, with an average age of eighty, breaks all stereotypes of their generation under the guidance of the comparatively youthful fifty-three-year-old director, Bob Cilman. Established in 1982, the chorus originally performed vaudeville songs, but a shift occurred when they successfully tackled Manfred Mann's "Do-Wah-Diddy". The octogenarians, despite their classical leanings, embraced a vibrant repertoire of pop, rock, R&B, and even alternative, heavy metal and punk songs. The energy they exude and the acclaim they receive from performing these contemporary pieces is nothing short of extraordinary. When film director Stephen Walker saw the chorus perform during their 2005 European tour, he was so captivated that he journeyed to Northampton to document their seven-week rehearsal period for their new 2006 show, "Alive and Well". This period is marked by Cilman introducing a fresh set of songs, some of which may not make it to the final performance due to their challenging nature. Adding to the drama, Cilman hopes to bring back two former chorus members, who had previously stepped down due to health issues. Indeed, the threat of health problems hangs over the chorus like a cloud, a constant reminder of their advanced age. Yet, as Walker discovers, the healing power of music and camaraderie within this unique group often proves to be an incredible antidote to these concerns. While the ensemble has enjoyed European tours and royal performances, this film focuses on their preparation for a home town concert. The journey is not without its heartbreaks, but the group is united by a shared "show must go on" mentality, a testament to their strength and resilience. Young @ Heart is a true celebration of life, a testament to the power of music, and a tribute to the undeniable spirit of this remarkable chorus.
