Plot

Joe Baldwin, a wealthy race-horse owner with a superstitious streak, believes his fortune on the tracks is directly tied to his generous acts of charity. Among the beneficiaries of his philanthropy is Jean Jason, a shrewd gold-digger whom he sends on a European vacation in a bid to sever ties, unknowingly accompanied by the suave gigolo and part-time artist, Paul Vinette. On the eve of a significant race, Baldwin, whose horse "Sarcasm" thrives on muddy tracks, pays a visit to a nearby orphanage. He expresses his desire for rain, much to the chagrin of the orphans and their caring assistant, Betty McKay, as it threatens to dampen their annual outing. Despite the rain, "Sarcasm" disappointingly loses the race. Convinced it's due to the orphans' negative energy, Baldwin seeks redemption by throwing them a grand party, during which he and the selfless Betty find themselves falling in love. However, their budding romance is threatened when Jean returns from Europe, demanding a hefty $50,000 to disappear. As Baldwin agrees to meet her demands, a violent confrontation ensues between Jean and Paul, leading to a mysterious phone call to the police, claiming that Baldwin has murdered Jean. Arrested and convicted on circumstantial evidence, Baldwin is sentenced to death. In an unexpected turn of events, he escapes custody and takes refuge with Frank Bent, a taxicab driver he had once helped. Alongside Bent and the unwavering Betty, Baldwin embarks on a thrilling quest to clear his name and unmask the real culprit, propelling viewers into a roller-coaster of suspense and intrigue.
