Plot

In the gripping documentary, WRESTLE, the raw intensity of Hoop Dreams meets the grimy mat of high school wrestling. This heart-rending narrative unfolds at the beleaguered J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, Alabama, a school with a notorious reputation on the state's failing list. Here, four young men — Jailen, Jamario, Teague, and Jaquan — grapple not only with their opponents in the ring, but also with the harsh realities of life outside it. Guided by their tenacious coach and teacher, Chris Scribner, these teammates wrestle with adversities more daunting than any State Championship: fragmented families, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, battles with mental health, and legal entanglements. These obstacles threaten to pin them down, closing the doors that their wrestling victories might have opened. Yet, the struggle isn't limited to the boys alone. Coach Scribner, a man of tough love and demanding discipline, must also reconcile with his own past and confront the intricate web of race, class, and privilege that he inadvertently steps into in the Southern setting. Brought to life by Director Suzannah Herbert and Co-Director Lauren Belfer, WRESTLE is a poignant portrayal of modern disadvantage in America. Over 650 hours of footage were meticulously gathered during the team's final season, resulting in an intimate, profoundly moving exploration of the trials and tribulations that mark the passage from adolescence to adulthood in a world where the odds are stacked against you.
