Wild Canaries (2014)

In the heart of Brooklyn, the engagement of Noah and Barri is being tested by life's cruel realities. Noah, on the cusp of a mid-life crisis at 36, and Barri, grappling with financial struggles due to joblessness, find their domestic life disturbed by their new roommate - Jean, Barri's friend and a restaurant manager with an inclination towards her own gender. The tension mounts when Barri proposes a daring venture to Jean - transforming an upstate property into a bustling resort, a dream fraught with financial uncertainties and devoid of investors. Noah, suspicious of Jean's motives, fears that Jean's acceptance of the proposal is fueled by her affection for Barri. Further straining their relationship is Noah's current employment under his ex-lover Eleanor, who despite her own lesbian orientation, split with Noah over differing life paths. Despite these personal dramas, Noah and Barri share a peaceful co-existence with their neighbors in their rent-controlled building. This includes the successful artist Damien and his family, along with the elderly Sylvia, whose son Anthony frequently visits from Florida. When Sylvia's death, deemed natural and due to a heart attack, sends shockwaves through the building, Barri becomes entangled in a web of suspicion, convinced that Anthony murdered his mother for insurance money. Her suspicions are fueled by Anthony's peculiar behavior post Sylvia's death. Barri's conspiracy is supported by Jean but dismissed by Noah as pure insanity, widening the rift between them. As Barri and Jean delve deeper into their secret investigation, they begin to suspect Damien's involvement, further straining Barri and Noah's relationship. Amid the dangers of their investigation and the growing suspicions towards their friends, their relationship hangs by a thread, unless they can find solid proof to align their beliefs. The truth, however, might place them in a perilous situation if Barri's suspicions are confirmed.
