Where’s Poppa? (1970)

In the heart of New York resides Gordon Hocheiser, a thirty-something lawyer entangled in a promise made to his dying father - to eternally care for his increasingly demented and eccentric widowed mother. This pledge, while honorable, has become an albatross around Gordon's neck, his life consumed by his mother's bizarre whims and his failed attempts to find a caregiver resilient enough to endure her peculiarities. A dutiful but disenchanted son, Gordon finds his existence teetering on the edge of sanity, his only solace being the emotional support offered by his married brother, Sidney. However, his life takes an unexpected twist when he crosses paths with the enchanting Louise Callan, an inexperienced private nurse, during yet another attempt to hire a caregiver. Their encounter sparks a love at first sight, an intoxicating flame that threatens to be extinguished by the looming presence of Gordon's batty mother. As he falls deeper into the whirlpool of love for Louise, Gordon, who has been haunted by fantasies of his mother's untimely end, finds himself contemplating drastic measures. He schemes to remove his senile mother from the equation, wrestling with the idea of betraying his father's last wish - either by orchestrating her death or committing the unthinkable act of placing her in a home. "Where's Poppa?" is a darkly comedic exploration of love, duty, and desperation, unraveling the lengths to which one man might go to escape the chains of familial obligation and take a desperate grasp at happiness.
