Plot

In the lush heart of Washington state lies a tale of two interconnected families, their lives deeply intertwined within the verdant landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The camera's gaze is narrow yet intimate, capturing the essence of the four main characters, their homes adorned with craftsman architecture, and the rich tapestry of their surroundings. The film's setting is as much a character as the individuals themselves – the steep hills, the rhythmic chug of passing trains, the whispering stream, and the old steel bridge, all witness to the lives unfurling beneath them. At the heart of this tale are two middle-class couples, bound by friendship and shared experiences. Jack Linden, a teacher, is married to Terry, a carefree housewife, and together they raise a son and a daughter. Their lives are intricately woven with those of Hank Evans, an ambitious writer and fellow teacher, and his meticulous wife Edith, with whom they share a daughter. As the story unfolds, we see that beneath the surface of their seemingly idyllic lives, the characters grapple with neglect, desire, and deception. Edith, feeling disregarded by Hank, ignites a passionate affair with Jack. Terry, despite her love for Jack, finds herself entwined with Hank. This intricate dance of infidelity sets the stage for a profound exploration of love, friendship, and betrayal in the backdrop of an idyllic town, its charm reflected in a store window or the tranquility of a tree-lined suburban sidewalk. In "We Don't Live Here Anymore," life continues amidst the chaos, the characters navigating their capacities as lovers, parents, and friends. The setting, ever-present, reminds them and us of the constant passage of time, the evolving nature of relationships, and the undeniable truth that life, indeed, goes on.
