Plot

In the tumultuous backdrop of 1938, as India feels the winds of change with Gandhi's party advocating for women's rights, the life of young Chuyia takes a drastic turn. Married but still lodged in the comfort of her parent's home, she tragically becomes a widow. In adherence to rigid tradition, Chuyia is abruptly cast away to a destitute widows' ashram situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges during a relentless monsoon season. The ashram, stripped of all but the bare essentials, is a testament to the severe poverty these widows are thrust into. Here, the narrative interweaves the lives of Chuyia, the beautiful Kalyani, and the ashram's moral compass Shakuntala. Kalyani, another widow who's young and radiant, is prostituted by the ashram's leader to fund their meager existence. This grim reality takes a turn when Narayan, of high caste and an ardent disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, falls for Kalyani. The question arises - can Kalyani defy the iron shackles of tradition and religious edicts to embrace love? Simultaneously, Shakuntala, steeped in her faith yet tormented by her circumstances, grapples with her destiny. Can she shield Kalyani or Chuyia from the harsh realities of the ashram? Amidst the omnipresent water, a symbol of life and rebirth, the film explores if there's a possibility of resurgence, or if the weight of tradition submerges all hope. Water (2005) is a poignant exploration of the trials of widowhood and the struggle against social norms in the holy city of Varanasi. It paints a stirring portrait of the desire for liberation from the oppressive social constraints placed upon widows and the yearning to break free.
