Plot

In the icy expanses of the Arctic, the genius yet controversial US Navy Admiral Harriman Nelson tests his latest creation, the Seaview - a marvel of atomic submarine engineering that has split opinions as much as its creator. During its final trials, the Seaview is unexpectedly bombarded by an underwater avalanche of iceberg-sized ice. The cause? The Van Allen Radiation Belt is ablaze, threatening to obliterate the Earth if the celestial inferno is not quelled. Amidst a crisis-charged UN assembly in New York, Nelson defies popular scientific consensus, arguing that the flames will not simply extinguish themselves. His audacious solution? Fire a missile at the flaming Belt from the depths of the Pacific's Marianas Trench, precisely sixteen days from now. This radical plan is backed by his ally, retired Commodore Lucius Emory, but the US government remains indecisive. Despite the UN's disapproval, Nelson embarks on a daring voyage aboard the Seaview, navigating a sea of dissent among his crew. Captain Lee Crane, the submarine's commanding officer; Dr. Susan Hiller, a psychiatrist conducting research on the crew's stress; and Miguel Alvarez, a devout scientist, all question Nelson's monumental gamble. Lieutenant Cathy Connors, the admiral's secretary, finds herself caught in a storm of loyalty and love, as she is engaged to Captain Crane. The internal turbulence mirrors the external threats. The perilous ocean depths, a UN-imposed ‘seek and destroy’ order on the Seaview, and a potential mutiny brewing within the crew, with a saboteur risking lives to undermine Nelson's mission, all contribute to an escalating crescendo of danger. As the clock ticks down, Nelson's audacity and the Seaview's resilience are put to the ultimate test in a voyage that could save or doom the planet.
