Plot

Immersed in the rich palette of the late nineteenth century, "Vincent & Theo" paints a complex portrait of the Dutch Van Gogh brothers, Vincent and Theo, who, despite their contrasting lives in Paris, find a common thread in the realm of art. Vincent, a staunch nonconformist, braves squalor and social scorn, embracing his faith in God but not religion, in his relentless pursuit of becoming a full-time painter. Theo, on the other hand, navigates the refined corridors of an art gallery, selling art that falls short of his own artistic tastes to maintain a comfortable existence. Their shared affinity for art is further complicated by their weakness for earthly pleasures. Despite his appreciation for Vincent's work, Theo refrains from selling it, knowing the world isn't ready for such a raw form of expression. When Vincent discovers it's Theo, not their father who has been his silent benefactor, their bond remains unscathed. Each brother, a tormented soul in his own right, grapples with his personal life and the shared turmoil that art stirs within them. The narrative weaves through a tapestry of pivotal moments and extended periods in their lives leading to their untimely deaths. It captures Theo's struggle with syphilis, threatening his amorous relationships, and his eventual foray into running his own gallery that further compels him to sell art he barely admires. Simultaneously, it explores Vincent's time in Provence alongside fellow painter Paul Gaugin, whom he deeply admires, and his infamous self-mutilation incident, which plunges Theo into a whirlwind of concern, leading him to seek Dr. Paul Gachet's help while battling his own tumultuous marriage to Jo Bonger. "Vincent & Theo" is a stunning exploration of the ebb and flow of their relationship, with Vincent's presence often casting a shadow over Theo's marriage. As the story unfolds, it offers a visually stunning tour of the locales that inspired Vincent's artwork. Despite their troubled lives, the narrative culminates by highlighting the posthumous acclaim Vincent garners, a testament to the enduring power of his artistic genius.
