In a clandestine mission of environmental and economic importance, Commander Jim Bradley of the United States Navy is dispatched to the isolated terrains of Japan. His task: to test a groundbreaking chemical with the potential to desalinate water, promising a future of endless hydration. His location: a peculiar saltwater lake nestled within an indigenous Japanese island, its waters possessing the precise salinity needed for the experiment. However, the island's native inhabitants harbor a profound fear of their lake, not for its unique salt content, but for the mythical deity they believe slumbers beneath its depths - Obake. The proposed experiments stoke the embers of their ancient dread, leading them to resist the intrusion of foreign forces into their sacred lake. It is believed that the chemical intrusion would stir their god from his age-old slumber, reawakening a creature of primordial power. Despite the locals' fears, the experiment proceeds, facilitated by the diplomatic intervention of Bradley's wife, Anna. The island populace is evacuated, and the scientific endeavor commences, shattering the tranquility of the secluded lake. As the chemicals seep into the waters, the unthinkable happens - the indigenous god, revealed as a titanic prehistoric beast, is roused from its dormant state. Unleashed and enraged, the colossal Obake wreaks havoc on the abandoned local village, leaving a path of devastation in its wake. Its fury unquenched, the creature then sets its sights on the bustling city of Oneida, threatening to bring the same catastrophic destruction to its unsuspecting populace. As the terror unfolds, the reality of their blunder dawns upon the U.S.-Japanese command, prompting a desperate race against time to contain the unbelievable chaos they have unwittingly unleashed.
