Plot

In the vibrant heart of 1956 Staten Island, Buddy, an ambitious Italian dreamer, purchases a two-story house with visions of a comfortable life upstairs with his wife, Estelle, and a bustling bar downstairs. However, the echoes of his dreams quickly clash with the harsh realities. Estelle's persistent doubts in Buddy's capabilities become the first crack in his aspirations. A stubborn Irish couple residing upstairs, refusing to vacate or pay rent, presents another hurdle. Adding to this complex conundrum, the woman is on the brink of giving birth. The child's arrival reveals a startling revelation: his father was Black. This fact drives the Irish husband away, leaving the mother and child at the mercy of Buddy's eviction. However, Buddy's guilt casts a long shadow over his actions. He arranges for the deserted pair to settle in a new flat as they navigate the adoption process. Amidst the turbulence of Estelle's wavering faith, the brave resilience of the Irish mother, Buddy's crumbling dream, societal racial biases, and the uncertain destiny of the newborn, the story unfolds. This tale is a poignant portrayal of human resilience and dreams, amidst the challenging backdrop of societal norms and prejudices.
