In the bustling heart of San Francisco, court stenographer Mickey Raymond cultivates dreams of becoming an acclaimed mystery crime novelist. However, she is confident that true stories lie in the heart of lived experiences. To fuel her creative furnace, she embarks on a two-week vacation to the sun-drenched shores of Malta, intending to uncover her debut story. Little does she know, the simple act of buying postcards at a quaint souvenir stand would trigger an unexpected whirlwind of events. The postcard, left as a clue by a man entangled in a crime, draws Mickey into a perilous underworld. Soon, she finds herself the target of a mugging, surrounded by sudden deaths, and pursued by shadowy figures intending to silence her. The local police offer little assistance, skeptical of her claimed innocence and suspecting her of concocting her own tale for fictional gain. Despite her lack of detective training and the looming specter of victimhood, Mickey resolves to unravel the mystery that has ensnared her. Terry Leonard, an American tourist with a sleazy demeanor who uses scams to mask his own insecurities; Nino Tenucci, an Elvis-obsessed Italian tourist and undercover investigative reporter; Eva Werner, a frosty German travel critic advocating female solidarity; Sean and Lizzy O'Reilly, a warm-hearted elderly Irish couple, and a local taxi driver eager to secure her as a regular customer. As Mickey dives deeper into the mystery, she quickly discovers that appearances can be deceiving, and trust is a luxury she may not afford. In this game of survival, Mickey must outwit her pursuers and uncover the truth, becoming the heroine of her own life's novel.
