Trees Lounge (1996)

In the throes of life's relentless blows, Tommy Basilio finds himself drowning in a sea of despair. He's a man who's seen better days, now stripped of his job due to a regrettable act of "borrowing" from the cash register. His love life is no better; his girlfriend, bearing his boss's child, has left him for the very man who fired him. This cascade of misfortunes leaves Tommy jobless and heartbroken, his reputation tarnished to the point where finding work becomes an arduous task. His existence is confined to the small apartment he occupies above Trees Lounge, a neighborhood bar teeming with vibrant eccentrics. These include characters as varied as the dejected husband and the old man sipping his life away, one drink at a time. At Trees Lounge, Tommy is just another regular, blending seamlessly into this motley crew of individuals who, like him, seem to have misplaced their lives somewhere along the way. As he stumbles through life in a drunken haze, the memory of his ex-girlfriend haunts him, fueling a desperation for something beyond the confines of the bar, a purpose that might bring meaning to his bleak existence. A twist of fate lands Tommy a job driving an ice cream truck. However, this new occupation leads him down a risky path when he becomes entangled with the seventeen-year-old niece of his ex-girlfriend. This relationship sparks a volatile reaction from her father, throwing Tommy into a whirlpool of trouble. His life, once just a monotonous cycle of despair, spirals into a tumultuous journey where every turn leads him further into the abyss of his misery.
