Winfried loves his daughter Ines, although he has a strange way of showing it. The irreverent father of an uptight daughter decides to play a practical joke on her by pretending to be her life coach. Taking on the role of Toni Erdmann means putting on a whole costume and a variety of mannerisms, but stubborn Ines isn't going to cave in. She initially squares off with Toni out of a sense of stubbornness, but the two eventually discover that this very simple act of play can be a way for them to connect in ways that they never could before.
