Plot

In the pastoral serenity of Auvergne, nestled amidst mountains and farmland, a tiny village schoolhouse stands as a beacon of learning and unity. Here, director Nicolas Philibert paints an enchanting portrait of communal life, exploring the profound journey of learning to coexist with diverse wishes and personalities. At the heart of this tale is Georges Lopez, a devoted teacher guiding 13 pupils, their ages spanning from a tender four to a mature 12. The classroom, a vibrant tapestry of warmth and color, serves as their shared sanctuary. Here, amid varying weather, from the ivory snowflakes to the gentle rain to the golden sun, the children learn more than just the basics of reading and writing. Under Lopez's nurturing guidance, they cook, organize, and delve into dictation. Their learning extends beyond the school's walls, with older students balancing household chores with homework, under the watchful eyes of their parents. As the academic year draws to a close, the children face the future with a blend of anticipation and apprehension. They visit the middle school and meet the incoming learners, all while navigating the complexities of arithmetic and grammar. Yet, under Lopez's tutelage, they procure a far more priceless lesson: the art of living and learning side by side.
