Plot

In 1956, a trailblazing 23-year-old Canadian biologist, Anne Innis Dagg, embarked on a solitary voyage to South Africa, becoming the first person to explore animal behavior in the wild on the African continent. This was years before Jane Goodall's journey into the world of chimpanzees and Dian Fossey's mountain gorilla study. Returning home armed with revolutionary research and insights into the beguiling world of giraffes, Dagg found herself facing barriers much harder to surmount than the African wilderness - the entrenched sexism within the scientific community. Despite publishing an impressive 20 research papers as an assistant professor of zoology at the University of Guelph, Dagg was denied tenure in 1972. The harsh realities of the academic world, where being a married woman was seen as a barrier to professional advancement, catalyzed her transformation into a fervent feminist activist. In the riveting documentary "The Woman Who Loves Giraffes," we follow Dr. Anne Innis Dagg as she re-traces her pioneering 1956 journey, uncovering a startling contrast between the giraffe world she once intimately knew and its present state. After three decades of absence from the field, Dagg is sought out by giraffologists in 2010, not only welcoming her back into the fold but celebrating her invaluable contributions. Interweaving past and present, the film offers an intimate look into the trials that shattered her career and the beacon of recognition that finally brought her back. It is a testament to one woman's resilience and relentless passion for the wild, painting a compelling portrait of a forgotten heroine and her unyielding love for the towering inhabitants of the African savannah.
