Plot

As the fiery hues of August blanket the world, two elderly widowed sisters, Libby Strong and Sarah Webber, find themselves reunited in their family's vintage summer cottage on a serene island off the coast of Maine. This seaside haven, which is now under Sarah's ownership, has been a constant in their lives since their youth, a cherished escape from their Philadelphia home. Life on the island is an intriguing blend of familiar and new faces. Among their island companions are the spirited Tisha Dought, the reliable Joshua Brackett, and the newly introduced Mr. Maranov, a former Russian aristocrat whose stay on the island is threatened by the death of his landlady, Hilda Partridge. As these relationships evolve, they subtly shape the sisters' destinies. In the twilight of their lives, the sisters face harsh realities. Sarah, still bustling with life and eager to savor its delights, has taken on the role of caregiver for the now sightless, irascible, and embittered Libby. But Sarah is acutely aware that she can no longer shoulder this responsibility. This realization forces her to contemplate alternate living arrangements that won't involve Libby's estranged daughter Anna, a woman capable but unwilling to care for her mother. As this potentially final August unfolds, the sisters' contrasting attitudes towards life and death deeply impact their relationship. Their interactions with figures like Tisha and Mr. Maranov could steer their future, shaping the course of their lives and their sisterly bond. As the sun sets on their August sojourn, the sisters are left to navigate the tides of change, grappling with the ebb and flow of life, death, and sisterhood. Their journey is a poignant exploration of the human spirit, the inexorable passage of time, and the enduring power of familial ties.
