Plot

The Trap (Ottaal) pulls back the curtain to reveal a moving narrative, inspired by Anton Chekhov's timeless tale, Vanka. Set against the striking backdrop of a quaint village nestled in Southern India, the film traces the poignant journey of Kuttappayi, a young boy grappling with the harsh realities of life. The story bubbles up from the depths of a dim, gloomy place, where Kuttappayi, in desperation, unfolds his tale through a letter to his grandfather. The story ebbs and flows with Kuttappayi's memories, sweeping us away to the lush landscapes of Kuttanad, where he arrives with his grandfather, Valiyappachayi, and their flock of ducks. Despite the shadow of his parents' death that brought him here, the village's charm is undeniable. It is here that Kuttappayi's life is set to start anew, amidst an ensemble of colorful characters - the village's illiterate postman, an unnamed dog, the affluent Tinku, and many more. In The Trap, the past and the present intertwine, creating a vivid tapestry of hope, struggle, and freedom, rooted in the simplicity of rural life yet echoing the universal human experience. The film is a timeless journey across centuries and continents, a testament to the enduring power of storytelling.
