Plot

In the kaleidoscope of New York's night, we find Vashti Blue (Whoopi Goldberg), an enigmatic, out-of-work actress cohabiting with her pet goldfish and owl in her modest apartment. The telephone, her lifeline, keeps her connected to the world outside, a world she attempts to navigate from her humble abode. As evening descends, Vashti's answering machine becomes a canvas of her life's realities and fantasies. Messages flicker through, bearing news of an audition, an overdue phone bill, and a voice that she is convinced belongs to Larry, her estranged lover. This sets the tone for a night steeped in phone calls and conversations, as Vashti seeks solace in the electronic voices at the other end of the line. From neighborhood markets to video stores, police stations to old friends, each call weaves an intricate tapestry of her life and her struggles. The cacophony of her nocturnal activities stirs her neighbor's ire, his frustration echoing through the thin walls of her apartment. As the night stretches on, unexpected visitors arrive - Rodney, her ex-agent with his new muse, "Honey Boxe", in tow. They seek refuge in Vashti's sanctuary, pleading for the use of her telephone. Rodney criticizes Vashti's fiery spirit, blaming it for her stagnant career. However, Vashti, undeterred by his accusations, sends them packing. As the narrative unfolds, this riotous, surreal night promises to bring more surprises for Vashti Blue, each phone call adding a fresh brushstroke to her extraordinary life's portrait. The Telephone paints an intriguing picture of a woman's solitary existence, her eccentricities, and her relentless quest for connection in a world that seems to be drifting further away.
