Plot

In the midst of a life bound by piety and purity, young Ewa finds herself at the heart of a tumultuous love story. Warned by her confessor against harboring sinful thoughts or feelings, she nonetheless falls for Lukasz, a new boarder in her family's home. His quest for a divorce, denied by the local church, intertwines their fates in an impassioned dance of love and desire. Wounded in a duel and separated from his love, Lukasz embarks on a journey to Rome seeking liberation from his marital bonds. Meanwhile, Ewa, left behind and bearing the fruit of their forbidden love, spirals into despair, her actions echoing the depths of her desperation. Upon hearing of Lukasz's imprisonment in Rome, she ventures into the unfamiliar streets of Europe, her heart pulling her towards him. Her odyssey through France and Germany reveals a bitter truth: Lukasz, now a free man, has surrendered to the arms of a wealthy wife and returned to Poland. Ewa finds herself ensnared by two conniving con men, who exploit her lingering affection for Lukasz in a malicious plot to rob him. Their plan culminates in a tragic reunion, where love intertwines with betrayal as Ewa attempts to assassinate Lukasz in the throes of passion. Surviving her attack, Lukasz remains oblivious to the danger, as Ewa flees, her life crumbling into the shadows of prostitution. A glimmer of hope emerges in the form of a benevolent, utopian-minded man, but the relentless con men lurk in the background, eager to exploit her connection to Lukasz. As Ewa risks her life in a desperate attempt to warn Lukasz, the tragic tale of their love reaches its poignant climax.
