In the sprawling ranchlands of California, Jesse Conner lives a seemingly idyllic life with his ailing wife Maggie, their mystery novel-obsessed daughter Linda, and their son Buddy who is enrolled in a special education school. Unbeknownst to them, their tranquil existence is about to be shattered by the arrival of a mysterious new horse handler, Susan Heller. Hired following the unsettling murder of their previous handler Will, Susan's arrival sends ripples of suspicion through the ranch, especially in the keen eyes of Linda. When Maggie suffers a freak accident that lands her in the hospital, a nurse named Callista Davis recognizes Susan as Karen. This revelation further fuels Linda's suspicion, pushing her to seek help from Jesse's mechanic, Paris, to unravel Susan's true identity. However, Jesse, attributing Linda's suspicion to her love for mystery novels, dismisses her concerns. As Linda doggedly pursues the truth, Susan's real motive starts to unfold. Born Karen Mills, she is actually Maggie's long-lost daughter, given up for adoption under the pressure of Maggie's parents. Plagued by a lifetime of abandonment, foster homes, and abuse, Karen has returned with a chilling resolve: to exact revenge on the mother who she believes never wanted her. With every revelation, the ranch is plunged deeper into a spiral of terror. When Linda uncovers Karen's stint at Carson Correctional Facility for arson and murder, her suspicions turn into outright fear. Callista, who once treated Karen at Carson, becomes the first casualty of Karen's vengeful spree. Unseen and unheard, Karen's plan takes a murderous turn, leading to the demise of Maggie in a sinister bath-time confrontation.
