Plot

In the cold heart of October 1944, Spain is a crucible of despair, destitution, and dread, still aching from General Franco's triumph in the Spanish Civil War five years prior. The "maquis", a group of rebel revolutionaries, weave a daring plan to liberate their home from the iron grip of Franco's rule. From the distant shores of France, they orchestrate a coup d'etat, their hopes pinned on a handful of brave exiles. Their mission: to obliterate a crucial bridge. But when the explosives betray them, detonating prematurely, the mission crumbles, leaving the bridge partially intact and the commando unit nearly extinct. A military unit, alerted by the ill-timed explosion, descends upon the scene, leaving only three survivors in their wake. One survivor, Anselmo Rojas, is robbed of his hearing by the blast, his eardrums shattered. Pursued by the relentless Capitán Bosch and his squad, Anselmo escapes into the wilderness near his hometown. He seeks refuge with Rosa, the wife of his captured comrade, Vicente Roig, whose leg was pinned under a monstrous rock during the botched mission. Meanwhile, the ominous Coronel Cortés dispatches Darya Sergéevich Volkov, a ruthless Bolshevik sniper, to locate and eliminate Anselmo. Rosa, striving to maintain a facade of normalcy, must also shield her daughter Carmen from the dangerous soldiers, aided covertly by a local shopkeeper, Josefa. As Darya employs her deadly skills to complete her mission, Anselmo, deaf and increasingly isolated, clings to his determination to survive. He still believes in the possibility of the coup d'etat, that the maquis could yet emerge victorious. Amidst the creeping horror, every decision, every move could trigger a cascade of bloodshed, and no one is truly safe in this silent war.
